Different Types of Clutches

Automotive clutches are some of the most important components of the automobile industry. These clutches are designed to synchronize two rotating bodies that are spinning at separate speeds. The most common use of clutches is found in the automobiles where there is always a need to regulate the speed from the drivers end. A clutch makes their regulation process easier by working as a medium through which the two rotating shafts can be directed to regulate their respective speeds. Automotive Clutch Parts need to be maintained properly so that they can deliver good performance for a long time. As these parts are important constituents of machines it is better to employ trained professionals to get the maintenance work done.

Various Types of Clutches

  • Single Plate Clutch:- It is the most common type of clutch used in
motor vehicles. Basically it consists of only one clutch plate mounted on the splines of the clutch shaft.
  •  Multi Plate Clutch:- Multi plate clutch consists of more than one
number of clutch plate instead of only one clutch plate in case of single plate clutch.
  • Cone Clutch:- Cone clutch is consists of friction surfaces in the form
of cones. The engine shaft consists of a female cone and the male cone is mounted on the clutch shaft.

  • Semi-Centrifugal Clutch:- Semi-centrifugal clutch uses centrifugal
force as same as centrifugal clutch. In this clutch springs are designed to transmit the torque at normal speed.
  • Diaphragm Clutch:- Diaphragm clutch consists of a diaphragm on
conical spring which produces pressure on the pressure plate for engaging the clutch.
  • Dog And Spline Clutch:- This type of clutch is used to lock two shafts
together or to lock a gear to shaft. It consist of a sleeve having two sets of internal splines.
  • Electromagnetic Clutch:- In electromagnetic clutch the flywheel
